Our Mutual Friend

Two thumbs up for this BBC version of Charles Dickens' "Our Mutual Friend." At about 4 hours, this is a great miniseries to check out. It follows the book quite nicely, which is always a plus in my opinion, and the characters are somewhat quirky and well, strange. They are more like how people are in real life, as opposed to caricatures of how people are, if that makes sense. They have interesting faults, tendencies and the way they are all woven together is a suprise. The book is a bit of a hefty read, around 500 pages, but well worth the investment. Although probably not as well known as some of his other works (which I will admit, I have not read), its an interesting character study and commentary on society and social "levels" if you will. Plus, it boasts the most scary stalker/schoolmaster ever to grace the pages of a 19th century novel. This guy is scary in the book, even scarier in the movie though. Eeek! Beware the quiet schoolmaster! Yikes! (shiver) Oh, and Enjoy!

(For you Pushing Daisies fans, you may well recognize "Chuck", and you PBS Sense and Sensibility fans will surely recognize the scary schoolmaster as the latest Colonel Brandon, oh yes, and Aunt Marge and Filch from Harry Potter, too. Those Brits! they do like their character actors!)

Thanks for this recommendation! We just got finished watching it last night. I have to say, it was dark, but those characters are really sticking in my head. I would watch it again!
